More Notes on the iPad
I'm watching the iPad special event feed. Something just occurred to me, Steve talks about how the iPad is not a laptop, but he still compares the cost per month for data to laptop price plans. They are not comparable really, the iPad will be significantly down on data usage compared to a laptop, there is simply less you can do with an iPad versus a laptop.
Also, what is quite apparent in the video is the crowd is really only half with him. There is a strong sense of anticipation at the start of the talk, and then there is a real sense of let down as the talk goes on. I really feel that the cheers and clapping are started by plants, and this is despite knowing how enamoured people are by Jobs!
I feel that Jobs gets the feeling he doesn't have the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand too, he doesn't have the same verve as usual, I think he needs the crowd to be with him to really feel his presentation.
The more I think about it, the less I want an iPad. There are too many limitations. It looks beautiful, but it is aimed at consumers, not professionals in my opinion. If they move into the home automation arena, the iPad could be truly wonderful. Imagine using your iPad to control all the lights and appliances in your house, and the coolest part would be you could wander around the house with TV streaming to your iPad, or (if they have a camera) you could wander and video chat. I am sticking with my long held belief, never buy a first-generation Apple product. I suspect the second-generation will remove most of the limitations I feel it has, and based on what I'm reading on the net, the limitations many people feel it has.
